After some thirty years in our Spring Street boathouse, we were finally able to build Jim Kerns Crewhouse in Veteran's Memorial Park in the summer of 2003. We broke ground a few weeks before the 2003 Rural Henley Regatta, and by August we were building boat racks and moving in. Boat storage for singles is available to members at $50 / year If you are spending time in the Klamath Basin and wish to row on Lake Ewauna, send us an e-mail and we can find some room in the boathouse for your shell or you may be able to slide in on one of our open rows. In the winter of 2004/5 the City announced a deal to expand Veteran's Park by an additional two acres just east of our boathouse. Due to our location, our club decided to begin naming our new boats in honor of Veterans. After all, it was the courage and sacrifice of our nation's military which allows us the freedom to enjoy our lives and our sport. Our first boat named under this policy was named in honor of 2nd LT David R. Kingsley, an Oregonian who posthumously received the Medal of Honor after he cared for and ultimately gave his parachute to a wounded crewmember when his B-17 was shot down on a raid of the Ploesti oilfields in Romania. Our second boat is named after Lt Colonel Bill Harris, a Klamath Basin resident who flew a Lockheed P-38 Lightning in the southern Pacific and achieved 16 confirmed air victories. |
